The 5 Best Insights From GBE Podcast Ep #10

Did you catch this week’s episode of the GBE podcast? We caught up with the founder of Beginning Boutique, Sarah Timmerman, about starting your own business and all things fashion.

Here are our top 5 favourite insights from the episode...

1) You don’t need the perfect pre-launch to start your business

When you start your business, you’ve just got to do the best you can with the information available to you at the time. There’ll be things you miss but that's okay. Know that you’re going to make mistakes and it’s fine so long as you are constantly learning and iterating. At the end of the day, people want you to succeed and will be forgiving if you slip up.

2) The key to social media marketing is staying interesting and relevant

Sarah has used various strategies to grow Beginning Boutique on social media over the past 13 years, including running giveaways, influencer collaborations, trips and events via Facebook. The key is to evolve and to always stay on top of new trends so that you can continue to serve your audience in fresh and exciting ways.

3) Financial forecasting is essential to good business

Whether it’s getting up to speed on your own numbers or hiring an external CFO to help you, it’s crucial that you get your financial forecasting right so that when you hire people, you can commit to providing them with a safe, reliable working environment. Taking on new team members is a big commitment - you need to be able to see the big picture and know what will be happening in your business over the next 12 months and beyond.

4) Keep your team accountable

One of the hardest parts of running a business is holding your staff accountable to the position you brought them in to do. It’s never personal, but if someone evades what they said they would do, you have the right to hold them to account. When Sarah was younger she found this hard to implement, but as with anything, it gets easier over time.

5) If they can’t get behind you, leave them behind

Sarah has dealt with her fair share of doubters over the years, especially when she became pregnant (some assumed she wouldn’t return to the business), but this never stopped her from moving forward. When you have a passion and a deep understanding of what drives your business, nothing can stop you. If they can’t get behind you as a female entrepreneur, then why should they get to experience a taste of your success when you make it?

These are just some of our favourite takeaways... but there’s so much more goodness in the episode itself!
