Hello, my name is Krista Altmeyer and I am the owner of Happy Stems Here (@happstemshere). Happy Stems Here provides fantastic flower services to other businesses at wholesale prices!

Among our services, the Senior Flower Club has been our most popular in 2020! This monthly club is a means for senior living facilities to offer a safe, engaging and Covid compliant activity to their residents.. and boy do the residents have an amazing time!

For the past 15 years, I have worked in roles of service. I’ve worked with Joe Shmo next door, politicians, small business owners, lawyers, celebrities- you name it! I am comfortable communicating with someone from any walk of life, helping them achieve their goals and I'm great at amping up their energy! I am also a certified florist in the state of Louisiana. 

Happy Stems Here is a direct reflection of these expertise of mine, joining forces to make a difference in the world. 

Tell us and our lovely readers what is it that you do? 

I enhance other businesses with my non-traditional flower services! I’ve tailored lucrative and/or complimentary flower services for hotels, senior living facilities, cleaning companies, cemeteries and restaurants. 

Our senior flower club has been all the rage this year! It’s a monthly flower package that includes everything you need to host a fantastic flower party within a senior living facility. Participants can enjoy the party 6 feet apart from each other, over Zoom from their private space or if permitted- together like the old days! 

The flower package is delivered like any Amazon package, so no outsiders are setting foot on your property. With it, you receive glass vases, fresh flowers, flower food, a host program, a monthly newsletter and a little something extra is always thrown in like a gratitude journal or a New Year’s resolution checklist! 

Every participant learns how to transform any grocery store bouquet into a fabulous arrangement- they actually take the arrangement home with them at the end of the party!

In other news, our premium hotel line is now available too! This untraditional flower service gives hotel guests a top notch experience. However, it doesn’t come with the additional foot traffic and germs that traditional florists may track on the grounds.

What hotel wouldn’t want to provide a germ free space, filled with premium flowers they purchased at wholesale prices? I tell ya, it’s a sad day whenever my hotel room doesn’t have fresh flowers ready to welcome me.

What is your story? How did you end up here?

I left my full-time job to further grow my business, Happy Stems Here. At the time, my hotel line was doing so well and I couldn’t wait to give it more attention! We caught the eye of investors and after several weeks of discussion they had validated my products, my services, and were drafting a contract proposal for the following week. 

I was ecstatic! 

It just so happens that very same week my city shut down due to Covid. The world was in such a state of uncertainty, we agreed it was best to postpone our plans. We tried to revisit them in April, but as you know things are still very uncertain. 

What was a girl to do?

People were receiving ventilators, healthcare, instructed to stay home but what about everyone’s mental health? I thought, “Now here’s a place I could help”.

It’s not just your intuition that knows flowers make you happier, it’s actually been proven by science. 

So, I started a campaign called ‘Spread Joy, Not Covid’. For every $13 raised I was able to deliver a fresh bouquet of flowers to the ER, ICU and senior living facilities and yes, each bouquet included cheesy stickers that said things like..

“We think you are dandy & we are not lion.” or “I hope thistle make you smile.” 

Nothing has lit me up quite like the photo of the nurses lined up to clock out of their very long shift while holding the flowers, or the clever nurse who used a hospital urinal as a vase to get laughs or the seniors hanging out in the sun smiling with their fresh flowers in hand! 

My heart broke for the seniors most. Covid had run rampant through many of the local facilities. The residents had lost friends, family, they were confined to their rooms and stripped from their activities to keep them safe. I understood the precautions, but I thought there has to be a safe way they can enjoy activities, socialize, work with their hands, laugh with friends etc. that’s safe during these weird times and that is how the “Senior Flower Club” came to be. 

Do you have a “WHY” for why you do what you do?

My main reason for wanting to be an entrepreneur is because of the lifestyle it can provide you.

When I was very young I didn’t have much of a relationship with my father. I remember seeing him come and go. Very nice guy, but the man had a full time job and a family to provide for- he was on the go!  Once he made the decision to leave his traditional job and start his own business is when he became such a big player in our lives.

He became the coach to every sport my brother ever played, brought me to and from school almost every day, cooked dinner with us, ate dinner with us, threw us and our friends across the pool no matter how many times we abused his services (poor guy!).. He was just “around”.

I want that chance to be a big player in my family. 

What are your plans for the future?

I am thrilled about reaching more senior living facilities in 2021! Spread the word friends and let’s give seniors across the country a safe way to engage with their friends and family again. They deserve to enjoy their beautiful life!

I am looking forward to working with more hotels as their industry opens back up. I really can’t wait to expand our reach across the US, make a difference to more lives and meet new faces!

What is the best about being who you are? 

I would say the best thing about being myself is the happy goggles I’m usually wearing. Don’t get me wrong, I have my fair share of bad days but more often than not I could fall face first in a puddle of mud and come up saying, “Ya know what? I really needed to throw those clothes out from 2001 anyway.”

I’ve been pickpocketed before. I was at a music club and a “lovely” couple befriended me at the bar. While I thought we were having a great time together, they were actually elbow deep in my purse. After they were long gone and I got over the initial hurt that I had been robbed, I was thankful it happened in my home town.

It was annoying, but there was nothing I couldn’t replace and best of all it happened right before I went to Thailand. That mishap made me hyper aware of “pick pocketing” situations that could have been much more detrimental when I was abroad. There’s almost always a bright side, you just have to look for it! 

I didn’t always wear the goggles. It’s a practice and I notice their powers are diluted when I neglect my daily mindset practices over long periods of time. If you would like a pair, I’m certain anyone can have some with a little practice!

What does your day look like? 

Even though I work from home, I have typically stuck to a 9-5 schedule plus weekends! Just recently, I’ve been breaking out of that mold and doing things during the day, as a trade for working later into the evening. 

However, my mornings are as eventful as the next person. I wake up, hit the coffee button and make breakfast for the household: myself, my fiancé’ and my dog, Creole. Creole eats first because she’s bouncing in front of me until food is in her bowl. Next, I meditate for at least 5 minutes. Then I get dressed, walk the dog and get in the office for the day.

I put on some work tunes. Something that's not distracting like a focus meditation or coffee house music. The day’s work consists of different things such as researching content to use for the upcoming flower clubs, creating the newsletter and other worksheets, designing the next bouquet, reaching new clients, taking in a new flower delivery, processing flowers, reaching out to publications, market research, etc. 

Kind of boring stuff ;-)

What business-related tips and advice do you have for our readers? 

My advice is to get real about where you are lacking in your business and invest your time or money there. For example, if sales isn’t your thing then either invest in a course or mentor to teach you how to improve your sales muscle or outsource the job to someone who knows what they are doing. 

Many of us have this DIY mentality to “save” money. Especially when you are a new startup. I’m a DIYer myself, I get it! However, there’s times that if you would just spend the money up front to improve your business you can make that money back in no time. 

What mindset advice do you have for our readers? 

Just like you should consider investing in your business, you should be investing in yourself too. When you are taking care of yourself, all areas of your life improve like your health, your relationships, your business! 

If it feels overwhelming or unfamiliar at first, try asking yourself where you could use some work. Don't be judgey or cruel, just have a real conversation with yourself. Then make a list of how you can improve those areas and do one little thing a day. These little improvements add up to a big happy you.

If you need a little kick in the rear to get the balling rolling then watch motivational YouTube videos. I know many of you are rolling your eyes right now, but they work!
